The Pillars of Hercules: historical review

pillars of HerculesOne, one-hundreth, one-thousand Pillars of Hercules. Everywhere. Are they in the Dardanelles? The Strait of Sicily? The Strait of Gibraltar? A narrow passage in the Northern Sea? Usually it depends on the wishes of people trying to locate Atlantis somewhere. Only for people looking for Atlantis the Pillars of Hercules feature a doubtful localization. People uninterested in Atlantis, who read for more than 2 thousand years classic authors' works on history and geography did not have relevant doubts. Indeed archaeological research has been carried on flawlessly and to tell the truth there has never been a remarkable debate on the location of the Pillars except the surroundings of Gibraltar. From now on, Atlantis Revealed also features a new chapter on the Pillars of Hercules, investigating the controversial work of Sergio Frau "Le Colonne d'Ercole - un'inchiesat". That gives the chance to review how the Pillars were described in ancient classic authors. In the section "Atlantis theories" it is investigated how Atlantis could be Sardinia and why. However the chapter can be also a general reference to clarify once and for all that the shift of the Pillars of Hercules from Gibraltar just put geographical places in a pointless Ocean where everything is everywhere. This is not the effect of a nearsighted attitude, but the consequence of an objective analysis of the problem. New theories do not necessarily imply progress. If they are proved wrong, they are just the pillars of regression.

New 3D elaboration: Atlantis at Pampa Aullagas

Some images representing Atlantis in Bolivia, at Pampa Aullagas' extinct vulcano (picture on the left) have been added in the 'virtual gallery' section sat. The 3D elaboration of the city is based on the vulcano altimetry and on the details told by Plato in the Critias. Canals surrounding the southern part of the mountain, which today are not visible, have been restored in the virtual pictures to match Plato's description. On the other side northern canals have been created follwing the paths of actual sandy canals which surround the center of the vulcano. These sandy canals are a natural formation which probably dates back to a period when the vulcano was still active. From satellite photos it is possible to note how this site is connected to lake Poopò by local rivers.they probably are what Plato meant in Critias as the "long canal to the sea". These peculiarities (natural ring formations an river to the sea) are typical of Pampa Aullagas and any other area in the Altiplano do not have such features, which fit very well to the city described by Plato. His description is for certain ways idealized (e.g.: perfect giant concentric circular canals) and mixed up with mythical elements (e.g.: Poseidon dug the canals), but it can be objectively interpreted thanks to the natural geographic formations the Atlanteans took adavtage to build the city. Moreover, as Plato said for the city, the site of Pampa Aullagas is in the center of the rectangular shape of the Altiplano, between its northern and southern edges. A last remarkable note concerns the walls of Atlantis. According to Plato they were decored with metals (like some pre-Columbian cities, e.g.: Tenochtitlàn), and those metals were orichalcum, tin and copper and they were very abundant in Atlantis. Their presence in the Andes is so abundant thet andean nations like Chile, Peru and Bolivia are among the best exporters in the world..3D_atlantis Orichalcum, described by Plato as "the most valuable after gold ", "glittering as fire "and "extracted from mines " is well recognisable in the alloys of gold and copper which had natural formation in the Andes. While waiting for a whole new section about Atlantis in Bolivia, enjoy this first 3D elaboration of Atlantis' city at Pampa Aullagas.
